When is the best time to visit North Vietnam for a great photo trip: this is the most common question not only for photographers but also for most of the travellers first time visiting Vietnam and the Northern part of the country. The weather is the main things you care about before your coming. There are two seasons that you definitely want to do a photo trip in Vietnam: they are spring and autumn. Spring is from second week of February to late April. During spring, it is chill weather, very colourful flower blossoms, festive atmosphere everywhere especially in the traditional rural villages. Vietnamese New Year also falls in the spring and this is the reason why local villagers celebrate their thousand year old festivals around ancient temples. Anywhere you go, you will meet happy people in their new fancy dresses on visiting their families and temples to pray for health, family, peace, happiness & prosperity.
The second season and the best of the best time to visit Northern Vietnam is the autumn from the late August till mid-November. It is generally dry, sunny and cool; lowest rainfall, sometime misty in the mountains, cloudy in the cities. Anyway, most of the days are pretty sunny around the mountain loops from Mu Cang Chai – Sapa – Bac Ha – Ha Giang and Ba Be lake.
The reason why the autumn is the best time to visit the north of Vietnam is because of its amazing rice terraces across the northwest and northeast of Vietnam. There is only one crop of rice in the northwest and north east mountainous region. The local farmers replant rice on their terraces from early May to mid-July. Normally, the terraced rice fields in Sapa are transplanted first, Mu Cang Chai and Hoang Su Phi are replanted a bit later. So the grain or harvesting season will start in Sapa from Mid-August to 15th September yearly. Then from 10th September to 20th October will be best time to see the golden color of the rice terraces in Mu Cang Chai in Yen Bai province and Hoang Su Phi in Ha Giang province. So if you want to have a photo trip to shoot the best photos of the rice terraces in Northern Vietnam, plan a trip route like this Hanoi – Mu Cang Chai – Sapa – Hoang Su Phi – Ha Giang – Dong Van karst Geopark. This is the most common and favourite itinerary for photographers. You can have 2 nights for Sapa, two nights for Mu cang Chai, 1 night Hoang Su Phi, and the rest of trip will be arranged for other places upon your interest. The rice terrace is still good in Pu Luong natural Reserve during late October and early November.
